Amsterdam Brass Quintet
The Amsterdam Brass Quintet was founded in January of 2004. The Quintet exists of young brass players who not only practise their instruments daily but who are also trying to reach the audience in a different way. The quintet plays a broad variety of styles of music. You can hear them playing Canzona’s from Gabriëli and fugues from Bach, but also songs of the Beatles and dances from Curacao. Because brass quintets as a form of ensemble were not always very popular (especially in Europe) it is hard to find music originally written for brass quintet. Some members of the ABQ are so devoted to change that fact that they write their own compositions, like Misha Sporcks “Parabolen” recorded on this CD.
During the existence of the quintet they performed in a USSR submarine which dates from 1954 (a good year for submarines!), they played concerts on Curacao because of an invitation from the CIFA foundation, recorded their first cd in 2006, they performed as a solo ensemble together with the National Youth Fanfare Orchestra of The Netherlands with the piece Concerto Medieval by Bernhard van Beurden (recorded on the CD 50 Years NJFO!), they played for the Minister Plenipotentiary of the Netherlands Antilles, sir P. R. J. Comenencia, they won the audience award at the OnWings! Competition in 2009, in 2011 Bernhard van Beurden wrote the piece “Out of Europe” especially for the quintet together with remarkable soprano Marieke Steenhoek, in 2013 they toured through Florida USA (you can see a local news item here), a memorable concert in 2013 at the Zuider Havendijkconcert in Enkhuizen and many more beautiful concerts and performances.
